Chiswick
House Festival Arts Installation Trail
24 September - 2 October 2005
Title:
‘Bull and Dancer’
Medium:
Paper and ink, on an exterior brick wall
For
the festival, the doors of this historic house and its grounds
were thrown wide open.
My installation was a response to the site and the spirit of the
event.
I was stimulated by the mythical imagery of the
statues in the garden, and by the sense of the history of ideas
relayed in design. The bull and dancer come from wall paintings
of ancient Crete, and the black and white tile pattern from ancient
Rome, things that the designers of Chiswick House might have looked
at in their day.
By making the image out of paper and gluing it
to the wall, I wanted there to be an immediacy that is about the
here and now. Hence the figures which have vitality, but at the
same time they are composed of simple units which are like the
supporting bricks of the wall.
